20170908 ENHS vs SHS Game Web LG-74The Sharyland Rattlers football team evened up their record at 1-1 Friday evening by defeating the Edinburg North Cougars by a score of 24-20. In what was a back-and-forth game throughout, the Cougars seemed to have sealed the win when they took a 20-17 lead by kicking a field goal with only 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

But the Rattlers, led by senior quarterback Diego Vela, moved the ball down to the Cougars' 8-yard line with 12 seconds remaining on the clock. That was when Vela found junior halfback Adrian Solis open in the end zone and they connected for the game winning touchdown with only five seconds to spare on the clock.

When asked what a win like this, after a 62-0 loss to Weslaco East in week one, says about his team, Sharyland head coach Ron Adame said, “I think it shows the character and the resiliency of some 16, 17 and 18-year-old kids that didn’t get down on themselves after getting beat pretty bad last week. They showed up to practice last Saturday with a great attitude and great effort and that’s all you can ask for. There at the end of this game it didn’t look like we were going to get the win, but it’s comeback wins like this that build character. I love these guys and I wouldn’t trade them for the world.”

As for Solis, who caught the winning touchdown pass, he was as surprised as anyone to see the ball coming his way in the end zone.

“To be honest with you, I was not expecting the ball to come to me but while I may not have thought it, but I know that I believed it,” Solis shared. “When you see your quarterback scramble the way Diego was, you gotta do what you gotta do to get open. And that’s what I did. And it wasn’t just me, it was the quarterback, the line, the other receivers that ran their routes correctly and everybody that executed their jobs. That’s how we win.”

The Rattlers, who have a bye in week three, will be opening their District 31-5A schedule with a road game against Valley View on Friday, Sept. 22.
